Sympathy? No, thanks!

I do not dare to tell you of
my age or circumstance,
I fear you’ll think me obsolete
and not give me a chance.

Present me with new ways to serve
when changes have to be.
Help me grow confident in faith
with strength that God gives me.
Still let me do what I can do,
I have God’s love to share.
Still let me be what I can be,
encourage me by prayer.

Your sympathy can drag us down,
and ask the question “Why?” –
a thought that ends, as Job’s wife found,
to say “Curse God and die!” (Job 2:9)
I’d rather you gave thanks to God,
and take from Paul a lead, (2 Corinthians 12:8-10)
already God’s sufficient grace
has given all we need.
