One Sunday morning, four friends in a pew
rose up to sing, as they usually do,
a Godly hymn that they all knew.
Anne’s lost in music, harmonies.
When will it be that each one sees
our church is built on tunes like these?
The Church’s one foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord. …
Bill is not one who’s led astray.
He knows he’s on the one true way.
Not Catholic or Seventh Day.
…Elect from every nation,
Yet one o’er all the earth,…
Cath’s led to serve, to cook and tend,
the weak and feeble she’ll befriend.
She knows her work will never end.
…’Mid toil and tribulation…
She waits the consummation
Of peace for evermore;…
So now that Don’s poor niece is dead,
he’s sad that she was never wed,
too meek to push her way ahead.
…Lord, give us grace that we,
Like them, the meek and lowly,
May live eternally.
Each thinking as they went their way,
“What gracious things God used to say –
He never speaks to us today!”
Next morning, as he went around,
beneath the cross the verger found
a pool of tears upon the ground.
